Why the native have land claim

I totally or hundred percent agree with William Hensley for taking our land without asking native first. I think that the natives should be payed by the U.S. The natives also did own the land because they were here before the white people came and took over. But it is also good that the white people keep away from the other natives land. They shouldnt bother them on the property that they had before they ever went there. And giving away the land for only 962.5 million, i would of went higher with the land but it was all good when they gave us 44 million acres of land. Well i guess. Actually it is good how much land they gave us...

  1. I agree that Alaska shouldn't have been colonized at all. The land should have stayed to the Natives and not be sold (as if they owned it!) to america. I do not think that they shouldn't of sold their settled arias, after all,it was theirs, but they shouldn't have sold the Natives land. Personally, I don't know if almost a billon was enough for settlement, but it appearantly settled the matter for AFN. I also don't know if there shouldn't have been any white settlements in Alaska, because, after all, the natives did benifit from trading to Russia. I also think they should have stayed in the settlements.

  2. What i meant was that Russia shouldn't have sold the Natives land to America

  3. I agree with Celia, because Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. without all of our permission, and we couldnt do anything about it, and now we get money from our corporations like Doyon, Sealaska etc...
Imagine if Russia did inform us about the transaction Russia, and the United States had?
I'm pretty sure all Natives would have been against it, and maybe it all wouldn't have went down, selling most of our land, and we wouldn't get money:(

  4. i agrred with Hensley as well, the Russians should never have sold what wasnt thiers in the first place. and i think that we should have gotten even more land for the reason that it is rightfully ours. and since they did sell it i think that we shouldve gotten even morre money than they gave us. but as i keep saying i think we are better off than the lower 48. and i guess i can be happy with what i have. its a lot better than being on a reservation with other Native tribes. especially if we were forced to stay in the same reservation as the Angoon people who my people have had a fued with since i can remember.

  5. I have no idea if the money was enough or not. Appearantly it satisfied Native leaders.
Actually, Kyran, the problem with the reservations is one reason why Africa is so riddled with problems. It put boundries that united vehement enemies together, even after independence, and so they started fighting terrible wars one with another.

  6. I agree that Hensley was right and with Kyran. The Natives owned the land, no one, except the natives, had the right to sell it. But I don't agree that the amount of money the natives were given in place of the land they lost or the amount of land they were allowed to keep was fair. Split that money up into an equal amount for every native in Alaska. Think about all the things that money could get them. Split it again with their children, and their children's children. How long do you really think that money is going to last? How long do you think money bought goods can last? Now think how much longer that land they lost could've lasted and how they could've used it for survival, culture, and just having a good life, how long could've that lasted?... How is that a fair trade?

  7. The 962.5 million is what the United States decided would be adequate and what the U.S. could afford to pay us over a period of time. I agree, we should have had a larger settlement but right now our corporations are doing good, we have established ourselves and Doyon and any other regional corporation and associations have in a way provided for us. Hensley may have angered many natives back then but the benefit and this new model system was definitely ahead of its time. We could have easily been put onto reservations but luckily we have not, without Willie Hensley we wouldn't be where we were now.

  8. Well what I think is that we did get a great deal and its WAY better than being on a reservation. And they did give us enough money but I think they could've given us more money.
